J&D Hobby & Crafts Dept 56 Display Tips

Building your display table will require a sturdy construction if you are designing a large display. You may want to put down a sheet of plywood and drill holes for your cords. Be sure to have plenty of cross pieces for support. As you can see we had the tables in multiple sections.

We completed the corner mountain before we finished putting the tables together. We could not reach the corner if the tables were connected. Be sure to think these things out to save you time disassembling your display!

Here are more examples of display layouts. It is a good idea to place your houses where you think you might like them. Then stand back to survey the layout. Trust me there are going to be times your will want to move some things.
Finish back levels first. You can always go back and add trees or bushes later. We found that using dried flowers and stems worked great for adding colorful landscaping.
Hi, and welcome to our display tips area. We hope to make this an area for both new collectors and those of us who have been collecting for a number of years. We welcome any and all ideas from our customers and we hope to have different sections, such as water, trees, mountains etc. here eventually.
The pictures above are mainly for the new collector. One very simple, easy way to add some realism, and also improve the views of your display is to create various heights for the houses. As a base using 2 inch Styrofoam is an excellent choice. Then you can use thinner pieces to raise the houses to different levels. This is available at most home improvement stores (Lowes, Home Depot, 84 Lumber etc.) The Styrofoam can be glued, taped or held together with floral pins (available at Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's and Michaels).
The background in the top pictures is a vinyl sheet with a snowy mountain and forest print. These are usually called Scene Setters, Room Setters, or Party Theme Setters and can be found easily by a google or yahoo search. One site that does carry them is Oriental Trading Co.
Thank you for visiting!
